Carmela Cantisani

A native of Southern Italy, Carmela Cantisani grew up on a small farm and enjoyed the natural flavors of home grown foods. Blind since birth from a condition known as Retinitis Pigmentosa, Carmela is a teacher of foreign languages, an entrepreneur, a world champion blind alpine skier, a classical pianist and is an accomplished gourmet cook.

Some would say her other senses are particularly keen to make up for her lack of sight. Carmela would simply say, "No one can fool me when it comes to salad dressings."

Carmela's ambition is to create employment opportunities not only for herself, but other blind people. Carmela's Gourmet donates a portion of the proceeds from the sale of the Vinaigrettes to organizations that promote independence, security, and equal opportunities for the blind, such as the National Federation of the Blind. Proceeds also go to provide recognition and training support to blind athletes.

The special Braille-imprinted label is an educational statement enabling the public to develop an awareness of adaptive communications.
